The Roman fort in Bonna was one of the largest military camps in the Roman Empire. It was located in what is now known as the Bonn-Castell district. The fort was in continuous use as a military base from 35 - 430 AD, predominantly by the much revered Legio I Minervia. Traces of the fort’s layout are still visible in the street plan of the present-day city. The centre of the camp occupied the area where Römerstraße and Nordstraße/Badener Straße now meet. These would have been known as Via Principalis and Via Praetoria during the Roman period. Around 83% of the structures are still buried underground. Copies of stones inscribed in Roman letters, a reconstruction of a Roman treadwheel crane, a recreated barracks building and a replica of an early Christian church can now be found on the fort’s original site.

The archaeological remains that make up the Lower Germanic Limes (NGL) UNESCO World Heritage Site are all very well preserved. Most of these structures are buried underground and well protected. Some are visible above ground. So far, there is very little on-site information explaining the history and significance of these finds. We are currently working on a comprehensive package of information and presentation resources to promote public understanding of these sites.
